Verifying that a pipe coupling is genuine is not really about spotting a fake. It is about establishing an unbroken line between the part in your hand and the certificate you are relying on.
That framing matters, because the expensive failure in this area is rarely a crude counterfeit. It is far more often a real coupling from a real factory, sold with a certificate that covers a *different* model, a lapsed edition, or a different gasket combination. Nobody forged anything. The paperwork simply does not describe the part.
These six checks close that gap. They apply to any branded mechanical coupling.
Check 1: The Body Marking Exists and Is Legible
Start with the part itself.
A coupling intended for certified service carries identification cast or stamped into the housing — typically some combination of manufacturer identity, model or series, size or OD range, pressure rating, and material designation.
What you are looking for:
- – A marking is present at all. An unmarked body on a product being sold for certified service is the single biggest red flag in this list.
- – It is cast or stamped, not printed on a sticker. Labels fall off, transfer between parts, and are trivially reproduced.
- – It is legible and consistent around the body — not partially ground, over-stamped, or painted over.
- – It matches the delivery note and the certificate. Model, size and rating should agree across all three.
Photograph the marking on receipt. It takes ten seconds and it is the evidence you will want later if a question arises.
Check 2: The Certificate Names *This* Model
This is where most problems are actually found, and it requires nothing more than reading carefully.
Work through the certificate and confirm each of these:
- – The model designation on the certificate matches the model being supplied — exactly, including any series or variant suffix. A certificate for one series in a manufacturer’s range does not cover a neighbouring series.
- – The size or OD range covers the item supplied. Type approvals are frequently granted for a stated size band. A part outside the band is not covered by that certificate.
- – The certificate is current. Check the issue and expiry dates. Approvals and quality-system certificates lapse and are renewed on cycles; an expired certificate is not evidence of anything today.
- – The issuing body is named and identifiable.
- – The scope statement actually covers your service. A certificate for general water service does not establish suitability for fire-critical duty.
A certificate that fails any of these is not necessarily evidence of a fake. It is evidence that you do not yet have documentation for the part you are buying, which is the thing that matters practically.
Check 3: Verify Against the Issuing Body, Not the Supplier
A PDF is an assertion. The issuing body’s own register is the fact.
- – Classification societies — ABS, DNV, Lloyd’s Register, Bureau Veritas, ClassNK, Korean Register and RINA all maintain public type-approval listings. Search the manufacturer and product there and confirm the certificate number, the scope and the validity dates independently.
- – Quality-system certificates — ISO 9001 registrations are verifiable through the certification body that issued them, and many maintain public directories.
- – National water approvals — potable-contact approvals are administered by the relevant national scheme and can be checked with that scheme.
If a certificate number does not appear in the issuing body’s register, ask the supplier to explain the discrepancy before the goods are accepted. There are legitimate explanations — a very recent issue, a listing under a parent company name — but they should be explanations you receive, not ones you invent.
One thing worth understanding about ISO 9001 specifically: it certifies the manufacturer’s quality-management system, not the product. A valid ISO 9001 certificate tells you the factory has documented processes. It is not evidence that a particular coupling meets a particular dimensional or pressure requirement, and it should never be accepted as a substitute for a product certificate.
Check 4: The Gasket Is the Approved Gasket
This is the check most often skipped, and on classed work it is decisive.
> Classification-society type approval attaches to the coupling and gasket as a combination — not to the coupling alone.
A genuine, correctly marked, properly certified housing fitted with a different gasket compound is not an approved joint. The certificate covers a specific combination. Substitute the elastomer and the part falls outside its own approval.
This creates a specific and common failure: a coupling that is entirely authentic, supplied through a legitimate channel, and non-compliant anyway, because someone economised on the gasket at some point in the chain.
So ask directly:
- – Is the gasket supplied the manufacturer’s own, for this model?
- – What is the compound, cure system and hardness? “EPDM” is a polymer family, not a specification. Peroxide-cured and sulphur-cured EPDM look identical and perform very differently.
- – Does the certificate reference that gasket?
On potable-water work the same logic applies. Contact approvals attach to specific cured compounds, not to material families.
Check 5: Material Documentation Where the Service Warrants It
For pressure-critical or classed work, ask for the material documentation behind the housing and bolting.
EN 10204 defines the types of inspection document, and the distinction matters:
- – Type 2.2 — a declaration of compliance with non-specific inspection results.
- – Type 3.1 — a certificate with actual test results on the supplied material, validated by the manufacturer’s own independent inspection function.
- – Type 3.2 — as 3.1, additionally validated by an independent third party or the purchaser’s representative.
Where the project specification calls for 3.1, a 2.2 document does not satisfy it. This is a routine point of failure on inspection and an easy one to close at order stage by simply stating the required document type on the purchase order.
Check 6: The Chain of Custody
Finally, the commercial question: where did this part come from?
An unbroken chain runs manufacturer → authorised distributor → you. Each step is documentable.
Grey-market and multi-hop supply is not automatically counterfeit — a great deal of genuine product moves through secondary channels — but it carries two real risks:
1. The certificate travels separately from the part, and may have been matched to it by someone with an incentive to be optimistic. 2. There is no warranty path. When something fails, the manufacturer’s obligation runs to their authorised channel, not to whoever ended up holding the goods.
Reasonable questions to ask any supplier:
- – Are you supplied directly by the manufacturer, or through an intermediary?
- – Can you evidence your relationship with the manufacturer for this brand?
- – If a technical question arises that you cannot answer, do you have a direct line to the factory?
That last question is often the most revealing, and it is the least confrontational way to ask it. A supplier with a genuine manufacturer relationship answers immediately and specifically.
A Practical Receiving Checklist
For goods arriving against a certified requirement:
1. Photograph the body marking before the part leaves the receiving area. 2. Confirm marking, delivery note and certificate all name the same model, size and rating. 3. Confirm the certificate is in date and its scope covers the service. 4. Verify the certificate number against the issuing body’s own register. 5. Confirm the gasket is the manufacturer’s own, and that its compound is stated. 6. Confirm the material document type matches what the specification required. 7. File all of it against the job. The moment you need it is the moment it is hardest to reconstruct.
Seven steps, a few minutes, and it removes essentially all of the risk that is removable by a buyer.
When Something Does Not Add Up
If a marking is missing, a certificate does not match, or a number cannot be verified — do not install the part and sort the paperwork out afterwards. Installed non-conforming product is far more expensive to resolve than rejected non-conforming product.
Raise it with the supplier in writing and ask for a specific explanation. If the answer is unsatisfactory, the manufacturer will normally confirm directly whether a given part number, marking or certificate number is theirs. Manufacturers have a strong interest in knowing when their marking appears on something that is not theirs, and they generally respond to that question quickly.

⚠️ EDITORIAL NOTE FOR MARCUS — READ BEFORE SCHEDULING
This draft deliberately does not match the calendar title. The calendar has it as *”How to Verify Pipe Coupling Authenticity (JWC, Aju)”*. I dropped the brand names and wrote it as generic methodology. Three reasons, all of which need your decision:
1. There is no source data for JWC- or Aju-specific counterfeit markers. The vault has no note on what distinguishes a genuine JWC or A-Ju casting from a copy — no hologram, marking-font, casting-mark or serial-format intelligence exists in DPE_Knowledge. Writing brand-specific “how to spot a fake” guidance would mean inventing it, which is both wrong and actively dangerous if a reader rejects genuine stock on the strength of a detail I made up.
2. The article implies an authorised-channel claim that is not yet papered. _action/dpe-owner-actions.md shows the Tier-1 JWC Manufacturer Authorization letter is still an open P0 item — unsent, not obtained. A public DPE article on verifying JWC authenticity reads as “we are the authorised source,” and right now the cert-rights-of-use clause that would back that in a tender does not exist. The same register notes JWC’s ISO 9001 GQ-210670 expired 2026-05-18 with renewal unconfirmed — so a “check the certificate is current” article carries an awkward edge while our own hero brand’s QMS cert is lapsed on paper.
3. Publishing may tip an active enquiry. The register carries an open action to test-buy a CVS Flex and inspect the casting for JWC OEM markings, plus a plan to ask JWC whether CVS is a known private-label account — *after* MA-letter rapport is established. A public DPE article about verifying JWC authenticity, published before that conversation, is visible to exactly the party being investigated.
Options:
- – A — publish this generic version as drafted (safe now; loses the brand-name keyword). Retitle the calendar entry to match.
- – B — hold #56 until the MA letter is in hand, then publish a brand-specific version with real authorised-distributor standing behind it. Strongest article, later.
- – C — drop #56 and repurpose the 28 Aug slot, as was done with #46.
My recommendation is B, with A as the fallback if the slot needs filling on schedule. The generic version above is genuinely useful and publishable today; it just leaves the strongest version of this article on the table.
